This Week In St. Louis: May 6 - 12, 2019

@ Galeria Obscura | $5 | 9pm
-Jordan Reyes (Chicago, IL)
-Dolor Portion
-Mark Plant Solo Noise Project

You might know Jordan Reyes from their part in ONO, Chicago's groundbreaking collective that is equal parts psychedelic and psychic. Reyes' solo work unfolds with haunting synths and an attuned approach to texture. Progression is key here, as can be heard on the artist's most recent release, Close. The venue for this one is Galeria Obscura, which you might already know as the cozy performance space connected to The Juice on Cherokee Street.

@ The Shrub | 9pm | $5
-Pigments (OK)
-People Zoo
-Soft Sweat

Pigments' swirly pop rock comes dressed in thick layers of delay and reverb. The Oklahoma City outfit is able to make space for its hooky riffs, pulling off polished pop gems while still reveling in a lush guitar tone. Everything works to serve the band's sound, which marries strong execution with a laid-back vibe.

@ Foam | 9pm | $7
-Musclegoose (Fayetteville, AR)
-The Wirms (Fayetteville, AR)
-Big Whoop
-Skin Tags

Two hallmarks of Fayetteville's punk scene scene hit St. Louis as part of a two-week trip to spread the bands' DIY gospel. It's a shame that this tour preempts the release of Musclegoose's upcoming 7" (which the band lovingly refers to as "5 fresh hot turds"), but maybe they'll have a few early copies. Big Whoop sets have become a rarity in St. Louis, so their spot on the show is alone worth the price of admission.

@ Foam | 8pm | $8 | all ages
-Slow Mass (Chicago, IL)
-Shady Bug
-Spirits Having Fun

It's rare that a band's name so deftly describes its sound, but here we are with Slow Mass, an anti-pop juggernaut of indie rock with quite the history. From touring with mewithoutyou last November to starting this tour in support of La Dispute, Slow Mass continues to grow, picking up detritus from each city the band passes through.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!
