This Week In St. Louis: May 20 - 26, 2019

@ Foam | 9pm | $10/$13 | all ages
-The Spirit of the Beehive (Philadelphia, PA)
-Strange Ranger (Philadelphia, PA)
-Camp Counselor
-Frankie Valet
-Joss Barton

The Spirit of the Beehive blends shoegazey pop with an indie-rock pace. The gain seems dialed back for a cleaner blend of strings, which clearly brightens all the rhythmic interplay in the guitars. While they're not minimalist, the band does take a less-is-more attitude, opting for a constant sense of dynamics. It's the kind of approach that pays off big in a live setting and Foam's more intimate space is the best place to hear them.

@ The Record Space | 7pm | $7 | all ages
-Laffing Gas (IN)
-Public Acid (NC)
-Newt Patrol

It's hard to beat a setting like the Record Space's arcade-filled record shop for a show. Laffing Gas' ripping punk spins out and changes direction on a whim, but everything is kept together by solid downbeats. Tourmates Public Acid bring a darker vibe with a ton of quick songs that clock in right around a minute.

@ Off Broadway | 8pm | all ages
New Music Circle presents:
-Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society (Chicago, IL)
-Bitchin Bajas (Chicago, IL)

The combination of Joshua Abrams' Natural Information Society and Bitchin Bajas is sure to make for a dense, slow-burner of a set as repetitions are used for an almost hypnotic effect. Off Broadway has been host to some of the more lively New Music Circle shows and this will be no different as the St. Louis institution caps off 60 years of amazing shows.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!
