This Week In St. Louis: Apr. 29 - May 5, 2019

TUE. APR. 30

@ CBGB | 9pm
-Sonny Falls (Chicago, IL)
-Phony (Chicago, IL)
-Swollen
-Ronnie Rogers

It's hard not to love Sonny Falls and their hooky, infectious and catchy set of garage rock tunes. Also along for the ride is Chicago outfit Phony - a new group from the same brains behind New Orleans band Donovan Wolfington. Expect a night of sidewinding indie rock that paves new paths through the genre.

THU. MAY 2

@ CBGB | 8pm | $7-$10
-Cell (Montreal, Quebec)
-Cpu Rave (Montreal, Quebec)
-Dentist
-Kiki
-Headbutt

Following up on last week's solid combo of punk shows is a duo of d-beat bands from Montreal. Cell's hyperactive hardcore is dressed in a sinewy mix of guitar gnar and precise riffing. CPU Rave comes at you fast with an wall of aural animosity. The trio of locals wave St. Louis' freak flag high, which is no small feat considering how weird we really are here.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more

This Week In St. Louis: Apr. 22 - 28, 2019

MON. APR. 22

@ Foam | 8pm | $7 | all ages
-Blessed (British Columbia)
-Shady Bug
-DJ Mark Plant

Blessed can almost feel like a different band from release to release. The Canadian outfit has been slowly injecting post-punk into their whirlwind indie rock for years and their new record shows a refined approach. "Salt" dropped earlier this month, proving that Blessed is an artful group that continues to progress while building winding roads of understated complexity. This two-band bill also features DJ Mark Plant (of Nibiru, Mark Plant Solo Noise Project and more).

WED. APR. 24

@ Rootwad Park | 7pm
-Nag (Decatur, GA)
-Lip (Baltimore, MD)
-Pineapple RNR

Nag and Lip are both used to being part of the same package. Space Taker Sounds released a split 7" between the pair roughly one year ago, and this tour is just another reminder of why these two work so well together. For the uninitiated, both bands offer up their own infectiously catchy brands of punk with Nag leaning into noise and Lip peddling post-punk. With Pineapple RNR on board, it's a can't-miss trio powered by a generator on the riverfront.

SAT. APR. 27

@ El Lenador | 8pm | $10
-M.A.Z.E. (Japan)
-Science Man (Buffalo, NY)
-BB Eye
-Trauma Harness
-Shux
-G.N.A.T.

The hits keep coming this week with Japan's M.A.Z.E., a band that teeters on early no-wave with a vocal approach that melts into wiry guitar and squalor. Science Man from Buffalo makes razor sharp punk that lives and dies in the garage as each song carries a frantic pace. You can feel the anxiety in these riffs, which culminates with a dark and unnerving vibe.

SUN. APR. 28

@ CBGB | 9pm | $5-$10
-Scrunchies (MN)
-Sloopy McCoy
-Kids

Scrunchies builds a thick wall of fuzz alongside an airtight rhythm section. The dual vocals work as a punctuation mark to songs that communicate in a very straightforward way, pulling from riot grrrl past while still feeling totally distinct. This Minneapolis crew continues on its own path, blazing new trails roughly a year removed from its most recent release, Stunner.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Apr. 15 - 21, 2019

SAT. APR. 20

@ Kerr Foundation | 8pm | $7-$10
-Pedestrian Deposit (Los Angeles, CA)
-Nadir Smith
-Dave Stone
-DJ Tiffany Minx

While the LA-based duo of Pedestrian Deposit sits firmly in the harsh noise genre, the pair's approach to performance art has garnered plenty of renown. Local sax legend Dave Stone plays his last local gig for the foreseeable future before he departs the city. A diverse bill floods the multi-level Kerr Foundation for a noisy spring fling of a night.

SUN. APR. 21

@ Foam | 9pm | free
NOiSETTE:
-Aiko Tsuchida
-Beauty Pageant
-Big Step
-Drew Gowran Ensemble

The latest iteration of the NOiSE series by Mr. Ben (of Freezerburn Zine, Beauty Pageant) brings back a recurring cast while including a few new faces to round out a marathon of experimental music. Of special note on this show is percussionist Drew Gowran, who offers up a fully-fledged ensemble in place of his regular solo sound meditations.

This Week In St. Louis: Apr. 8 - 14, 2019

MON. APR. 8

@ Foam | 9pm | $7-$10
-Tatsuya Nakatani + Assif Tsahar
-NNN Cook + JoAnn McNeil
-Fuck Lungs

You might remember Tatsuya Nakatani from his immersive Nakatani Gong Orchestra, and the Japanese percussionist returns to St. Louis in a duo with Israeli saxophonist Assif Tsahar. The two have been collaborating together for two decades, using extended technique to explore experimental jazz and freeform music. This night of duos is rounded out by a rare live collaboration of NNN Cook and ambient artist JoAnn McNeil.

@ The Ready Room
8pm | $10/$13 | all ages
-Special Interest (New Orleans, LA)
-Boy Harsher (MA)
-DJ Ghost Ice

Boy Harsher is the obvious headliner here, but Special Interest is no less a must see. Rough-edged industrial beats lay a bedrock for shrill riffs and an unrelenting vocal assault. The New Orleans band unwinds in real time, staying just tight enough to evoke no-wave vibes.

WED. APR. 10

@ Pizza Head | 9pm | free | all ages
-Hotline TNT (MN)
-Nibiru

Last time Hotline TNT came to town, we called the band a live manifestation of the first Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack (Playstation version, of course). So that alone makes them a perfect fit to play a free punk show at a pizza joint.

SAT. APR. 13

Sat. Apr. 13 @ The Record Space
10am
Record Store Day:
-BB Eye
-Lysergik Acid
-Blackwell
-No Point
-Fight Back Mountain
+many more

It seems like St. Louis has been a revolving door for record stores, but the Record Space in Affton seems to be doing everything right. If you need any proof, check out the full lineup for the spot's first Record Store Day event. It's the perfect excuse to check out the shop and discover new favorites.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!
