This Week In St. Louis: Apr. 1 - 7, 2019

@ The Shrub | 9pm | $5
-Allegra (Philadelphia, PA)
-Fine (Providence, RI)
-Sloopy McCoy
-American Poetry Club

Allegra's sugary sweet sound is made up of polyrhythms with a complex crosshatch of textures. The whole band is wound tight, squeezing out syncopated beats that propel each song with a jazzy vibe. Tourmates Fine boast an unapologetic brand of queercore that spiritually rhymes with heavy '90s grunge.

@ Foam | 9pm | $7-$10
-Hikes (Austin, TX)
-Jr. Clooney
-Pono Am
-18andCounting & TheOnlyEnsemble
-Ryan Wasoba

Whether it's intentional or just a consequence of their clean and precise approach to math rock, Hikes' set feels much like a live soundtrack. The songs progress seamlessly while moving at a breakneck pace, blending peaks and valleys into an ongoing ripple of warbling guitars, all dense with melody.

@ Foam | 9pm | $7
-Buddy Crime (Louisville, KY)
-Net (Oklahoma City, OK)
-Sea Priestess
-Trauma Harness

In a way, Louisville's Buddy Crime is the perfect middleground on a show with St. Louis post-punk torchbearers Trauma Harness and the space-faring Sea Priestess. Buddy Crime pours syrupy synths over clangy industrial beats for a dark pop odyssey. A late addition to the show, Oklahoma City's Net brings a circuit-bent set of cyberpunk rippers.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week in St. Louis: Mar. 25 - 31, 2019

SAT. MAR. 30

@ Foam | 9pm | $7
-Moodie Black (MN)
-Teacup Dragun

Noise rock? Moodie Black calls itself "noiserap" and it's easy to see why. Lumbering synth runs adjacent to guitar noise while tense beats weave between the two, It's a jagged hip-hop odyssey that rarely stops for air, exhausting a range of tones and textures in the process.

@ The Nest | 8pm | donation$
-Gender Confetti (Madison, WI)
-Dumpster Dick (Madison, WI)
-Sean Green (Chicago, IL)
-Cranky Yellow

There's no pretense in Gender Confetti's brand of upbeat power pop. Elyse Clouthier and Sylvia Johnson ride the same psychic wavelength as they play propulsive and melodic punk. And don't sleep on Dumpster Dick, a post-hardcore outfit made up of all trans, all queer folks.

@ 720 N. 1st | 8pm | $5
-Forest Management (Chicago, IL)
-Danielle Williams
-Head Dress

Those looking for ambient and deep listening can find a lush spectrum of sound throughout Forest Management's discography. The bandcamp is a trove of exploratory music that feels distinct and engrossing. Chicago native John Daniel comes to St. Louis on the heels of Drift, a CD re-release of a digital album he recorded to help himself sleep.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Mar. 18 - 24, 2019

MON. MAR. 18

@ CBGB | 9pm | $5-$7 | 21+
-Le Crabe (France)
-A Ten Year Winter (France)
-Sloopy McCoy

Even without the allure of two acts from France playing a dive bar on south grand, this is a stacked show that should be packed. Both Le Crabe and A Ten Year Winter are French hip-hop artists who take an experimental approach - but that's where the similarities stop. With Sloopy on deck (with the first of two shows for her this week), this is an expansive night of sound with little boundaries.

WED. MAR. 20

@ Foam | 8pm | $10 | all ages
-Lavender Country (WA)

St. Louis has been blessed as a second home for the resurgence of Lavender Country, one of the first known openly gay artists in country music. Led by Patrick Haggerty, Lavender Country returns to town with a backing band that features many of our city's most prolific players. Joss Barton, who has performed with Haggerty and company in the past, also hosts a talent show to benefit trans people of color.

FRI. MAR. 22

@ El Lenador | 9pm | $7 | 21+
-Nectar (IL)
-Him Morrison (MS)
-Trauma Harness
-Sloopy McCoy

From the bedroom to the basement, Champaign, Illinois native Kamila Glowacki started with a four track and quickly grew to a full band with a backlog of releases to dig through. It's unapologetic pop punk with a lot of heart that's hard to top. St. Louis' own Trauma Harness returns to kick off a busy spring for the band, who spent much of the last year laying off live shows.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week in St. Louis: Mar. 11 - 17, 2019

MON. MAR. 11

@ El Lenador | 9pm | $5-$7
-Olivia Neutron-John (PA)
-Ghost Ice
-Jane Wave

After years of renowned live sets and a word of mouth that's spread like wildfire, Olivia Neutron-John is on the verge of releasing their first full-length album through Sister Polygon Records. The single, "March," dropped just a few weeks back, giving the first glimpse into an ambitious set of songs that were mixed and mastered by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier.

WED. MAR. 13

Wed. Mar. 13 @ Foam
7pm | $8
-Dead Rider (Chicago, IL)
-Black Spade

Dead Rider is an unnatural evolution of the modern rock and roll band fronted by U.S. Maple guitarist Todd Rittmann. The disjointed sound evokes a sense of funk on uneven ground, made ever more menacing by Rittmann's subtle croons and soulful moans. The show itself casts a wide net of noise with opening sets from hip-hop juggernaut Black Spade and the avant string duo Apathist!

FRI. MAR. 15

@ CBGB | 9pm | $5 | 21+
-Sexy Dex and the Fresh (New Orleans, LA)
-Sea Priestess
-Sloopy McCoy

While Sexy Dex and the Fresh is unrelenting in its execution of neon-soaked pop, hints of shoegaze bubble up from time to time. This is a band plucked right from the cyberpunk streets of 2099, unphased from the jet lag typically caused by time travel. There's an ethereal sound here that makes Sexy Dex and company feel untouchable, and those cosmic vibes are present in every inch of the band's raw funk.

@ Foam | 9pm | $7 | all ages
-Dimesack (Kansas City, MO)
-Crush Crusher (Oklahoma City, OK)
-Mala Leche
-Ace Of Spit

Whether you're familiar with KC outfit Phantom Head or not, guitarist Dan Ohm leaves very specific indentations in whatever punk or hardcore band he's a part of. Dimesack carries on the sordid squalor of his former bands while trudging through a new brand of swampy sludge. With members of American Hate and many more OKC punk royalty, Crush Crusher blasts through a frenetic set of fast-paced songs that rarely rip for more than a minute.

SUN. MAR. 17

@ Foam | 8pm | $10 | all ages
-Lala Lala (Chicago, IL)
-Bugg (IN)
-The Funs
-Pineapple RNR

Despite Lala Lala's dark and somber indie sound, there's a bright side that's always present. The band is simply catchy throughout and that's just one of many feats achieved on their latest full-length The Lamp, released through Hardly Art this past September. And look, Ben from Drool is on drums. Bugg also brings its Bloomington grunge to this all-star bill.

There are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Mar. 4 - 10, 2019

@ Foam | 9pm | $5
-Claire Rousay (San Antonio, TX)

If Rousay's name feels familiar, you might be thinking of the many times this Texas-based percussionist has come through town in recent years. From disparate and gut-wrenching sounds to bright and hyperactive pitter-patter, Claire Rousay's expansive range is matched only by the varied local lineup.

@ Foam | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Red Sea (Atlanta, GA)
-Shady Bug (LP release)
-Yuppy (EP release)

Red Sea's defracted riffs and full-bodied vocals carry the band's brand of prismatic indie rock. In addition to this Atlanta outfit, St. Louis is here in full force with Tonina (who made Barack Obama's best of 2018 list) and a dual release show by both Shady Bug and Yuppy.

@ Treffpunkt | 9pm | $5-$7
-Grün Wasser (Chicago, IL)
-Sea Priestess
-Tomorrow's Corpse
-Crim Dolla Cray
-DJ Ghost Ice

Grün Wasser makes cold industrial songs fit for a nuclear winter. Their most recent LP, Predator/Prey, shows the Chicago duo in full effect with dense, warbling tones and kaleidoscopic walls of synth. Stringent beats bring a signature punchiness to the sound, punctuated by a guttural vocal approach that cuts deep.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!
