This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 25 - Mar. 3, 2019

WED. FEB. 27

@ CBGB | 9:30pm | $7
-Sick Thoughts (New Orleans, LA)

Sick Thoughts is where the purest forms of punk and rock blend to make a mixed blend of heavy, pop sensible songs. It's the kind of sound that's easy to wrap your head around, and it all works so well because of the band's no-frills approach. Nothing's getting in the way of a good song or a good time.

@ Foam | 9pm | $7
-Crown Larks (Chicago, IL)
-Jane Wave
-Ronnie Rogers

It's prog but it also kind of isn't. Chicago's psychedelic super group makes music that could find its way out of any maze, but the songs carry a common thread that feels approachable and altogether chill. Crown Larks show no sign of slowing down, still riding the rush from their 2017 LP, Population.

@ El Lenador | 9pm | $5
-Shell Of A Shell (Nashville, TN)
-Glued (record release)
-Body Leash

Shell Of A Shell's bent riffs are propelled by a heavy and heady rhythm section. Through the course of a single song, guitar tones tend to melt together and slowly come back apart, lending a wide range of both wiry and dense sounds. Plus, Glued is celebrating the release of their first full-length album, due out this day on Born Yesterday Records.

@ The Nest | 9pm | $5-$7
-Side Action (Chicago, IL)
-Newt Patrol

Side Action plays with tension and release for stretchy hardcore songs with an especially dark vibe. The Chicago outfit's subtext is vital with a straightforward style of delivery than can't be mistaken. The trio of local bands is on point too with a diverse cut of St. Louis punk.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 18 - 24, 2019

MON. FEB. 18

@ Off Broadway | 8pm | free
-Pussy Foot (Chicago, IL)
-The Funs

Pussy Foot's warped punk has a glossy sheen thanks to its cymbal-heavy beats and lush guitar sound. The band's density can't be overstated, and that full sound backs up solid and driving songwriting. The whole show is stacked from top to bottom with local favorites, including Glued whose new record comes out in just a few short weeks.

SAT. FEB. 23

@ Pop's Blue Moon | 8pm | free
-JoAnn McNeil
-Head Dress
-Blank Thomas
-Eric Hall

Between the lineup, live projections by GlitchGirl and the little catch that this is a booze-free event, this show has a special vibe. Scrambled synths, fragmented beats and long form ambient music fills the cozy quarters at Pop's Blue Moon. Been missing Master Pieza? They'll be on hand to whip up made-to-order pizzas alongside the non-alcoholic craft drinks, herbal tea/juice blends and more on offer.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 11 - 17, 2019

FRI. FEB. 15

@ El Lenador | 8pm | $5 | 21+
-Ripped Genes (Columbia, MO)
-Dank Fizzer
-Sloopy McCoy

Ripped Genes builds up slow burning songs that still feel as if they're moving in slow motion. And while that might seem a little long-winded, the Columbia outfit incorporates this nuanced drone into its indie rock in an inventive way. As they wind down, each song feels well-traveled with a subtle sense of progression.

SAT. FEB. 16

@ Fellowship STL | 8pm | $10
Drummers Only:
-Sowande Mustakeem
-Dee Ball
-Shawn Durham
-Kaleb Kirby
+many more

While we don't brand any show as a "Wrong Division" event, we do help organize Drummers Only, an annual drum installation with short sets from area percussionists. This is far from a drum circle, as each performer presents their own 5-15 minute set with a wide range of styles, disciplines and skill levels. This edition of Drummers Only is a benefit for Fellowship STL (formerly Treffpunkt), a new space aiming to serve the Cherokee Street neighborhood.

SUN. FEB. 17

@ Foam | 1pm | donation$
-Frankie Valet
-Golden Curls
-Ronnie Rogers
+many more

The gofundme page for Foam has many more details about the venue and its current situation, but the gist is that Foam and company are raising funds to secure their future. This is the best benefit show the space could ask for with a long lineup of local favorites that lasts all day and night.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 4 - 10, 2019

@ CBGB | 8pm
-The Noids (Denton, TX)
-BB Eye

The Noids bring bulletproof hardcore, squeezing dark gnar into mid-tempo movements that last no more than two to three minutes. This show is stacked with a rare set by BB Eye (featuring members of Lumpy, Warm Bodies and more) and St. Louis' own Waterproof, who recently returned from hiatus.

@ Foam | 9pm | $7
-Bib (NE)

The guitar in Bib does a lot of heavy lifting as each riff carries considerable weight. The band has a tendency to shapeshift from song to song, but the general vibe is unmistakably punk with an injection of early metal. On record, the vocals are obscured to great effect, inciting an undercurrent of dread and uncertainty beneath Bib's lumbering sound.

@ Tim's Chrome Bar | 9pm | $5
-Huht (EP release)
-DJ Lord Soul

Kraut rock and synth pop find common ground in Huht's pocket dimension of warbling keys and dense, polyrhythmic beats. The trio builds a stacked sound that feels like it's constantly unfolding despite the busy layers. Peel back the band's intricate weaving of melody and percussion as they play two full sets with DJ Lord Soul filling the gaps throughout the night.

These are just some highlights. See the side bar for more!
