This Week In St. Louis: Mar. 26 - Apr. 1, 2018

MON. MAR. 26

@ Foam | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Dark Web (Philadelphia, PA)
-Waste Man (New Orleans, LA)
-Shitstorm

Reminiscent of dark, down-tempo hardcore with a tendency to tear its own songs to shreds, Philly's Dark Web performs in a way that almost seems effortless. For all its noise, the band stays cold to the touch while letting out a loose movement of sordid punk rock.

SAT. MAR. 31

@ Kerr Foundation | 9pm | $7-$10
Grownup Music presents:
-NNN Cook (tape release)
-JoAnn McNeil
-Astro Blackus
-DJ Floodgate

Nathan Cook departs from his own Close/Far Recordings label to collaborate with the heads over at Grownup Music for a release that should be as unglued as ever. The event takes advantage of what could possibly be St. Louis' coolest venue in the Kerr Foundation, a multilevel art compound located right off of the riverfront.

SUN. APR. 1

@ Flop House | 9pm
-Frank Hurricane (NY)
-Jewel Eye (PA)
-JoAnn McNeil
-Mother Meat

Frank Hurricane doesn't play songs so much as he tells stories of life on the road along with other inane happenstances. His brand of humor can be wet or dry, and his approach is interwoven with a finger-picking style befitting a true troubadour.

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | $8-$10 | all ages
-Don Dietrich and Ben Hall

This sax and drum squalor is propped up by a backbone of static and hum. This duo makes use of post-processing to punctuate, with several exclamation marks, a wall of free jazz that is both busy and vicious in equal measure. This is a rare show for the Sinkhole, a venue typically outfitted with punk and garage rock.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Mar. 19 - 25, 2018

MON. MAR. 19

@ CBGB | 9pm | $5
-Jane Wave
-The Cowboys (Bloomington, IN)
-Nibiru

Fresh off tour and her recent album, Plastic Peridot, Jane Wave supports The Cowboys, a Bloomington, Indiana-outfit that riffs on classic rock without being beholden or constrained to the genre. The sequel to Mark Plant's Times Beach, aka Nibiru, fires off a new round of raw pop.

TUE. MAR. 20

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | $5
-The Phlegms (AR)
-Sunwyrm
-Thee Oswalds

The Phlegms aren't ooey and gooey in name alone -- the band's sordid sound feels just as sticky and infectious. The psychedelics coming from Sunwyrm are both lurid and ludicrous, reaching from noise rock and riff-heavy jam bands in equal measure.

WED. MAR. 21

@ 2720 basement | 9pm | $5
-Radiation Risks (Buffalo, NY)
-The Stranger
-GNAT

The mutants that make up Radiation Risks absolutely revel with a forced injection of funk into its finely-tuned punk. The songs here are wound tight to the point that they eventually snap, breaking into slick, danceable sections before winding back up again.

THU. MAR. 22

@ Off Broadway | 8pm | $10-$20
New Music Circle presents:
-The Thing (Sweden/Norway)

As a trio, the Thing manages to manipulate space with subtley syncopated rhythms that dodge discernible timing with reckless abandon. The sound offers up a playful kind of chaos that is innately primal and ultimately welcoming. This is a free-jazz party through and through.

SUN. MAR. 25

@ Hoel | 8:30pm | $5
-Curt Oren (Chicago, IL)
-Henry Hank (Springfield, IL)
-ICE
-Dentist

We can't say enough nice things about Curt Oren, whose set weaves between story-telling, anecdotal comedy, inclusive sing-alongs and experimental jazz. Really, he manages to cram all of those things into one cohesive and compact set. New album coming out on Already Dead this summer.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Mar. 12 - 18, 2018

MON. MAR. 12

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Slump (Richmond, VA)
-True Body (VA)
-Shitstorm

Slump pulls its set of molten punk through portals to achieve an intense brand of harsh psychdelia. The slow burns here never reach the territory of a jam band, but the riffing does evoke a sense of exploration. Shitstorm maintains its role as the city's utmost in workhorse garage rock.

THU. MAR. 15

@ Blank Space | 8pm | $7-$10
Grownup Music presents:
-Mike Herr (tape release)
-Ra Child
-Larva Lu
-DJ 18&Counting

The prodigal drummer returns to St. Louis after moving to Austin last Fall. Mike Herr puts a punctuation mark on 2017's Continual Debrief with a new raw, succinct document released by the heads over at Grownup Music (GUM). The night is sure to be an audio-visual chill pill for fans of abstract percussion.

FRI. MAR. 16

@ Foam | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Paddlefish (Springfield, MO)
-Kid Chrome (Olympia, WA)
-Isabel Rex
-Waterproof

With a lackadaisical vibe but a solid and pointed approach to songwriting, Paddlefish constructs pop-friendly riffs that revel in fuzz and buzz. Isabel Rex returns for a rare show in support of two touring acts that vary in style while both bringing substance.

SAT. MAR. 17

@ El Lenador | 9pm | $5
-Jack Toft (Buffalo, NY)
-Cranky Yellow
-Ex Salis
-Li'l Smokie
-Zak M

Jack Toft is a DIY journeyman who has picked up the detritus of punk and sordid pop to construct a bizarre set of raps with a minimalist approach to backing tracks. OK, so songs like "Doin' Beers" and "Why Live When You Can Die" are surface level at best, but Jack's rhymes have little nooks and crannies filled with baffling loops of logic and inanity.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Mar. 5 - 11, 2018

MON. MAR. 5

@ Bolozone | 9pm | $5
-Dog Prison (Little Rock, AR)
-Butthole (Nashville, TN)
-Glued
-Body Leash

Through Dog Prison's thick mesh of fuzz and feedback comes rock riffs that feel subtly surfy with malicious undertones hidden underneath. Butthole comes from Nashville with an equal level of gnar, making for a fast and fierce power run of bands.

@ Flood Plain | 7pm | $5
-Fuck Lungs (album release)
-Tracky Naw
-Cunningham/Suen/Gray trio

Joe here. This is an album release for my project with Chicago-based saxophonist Curt Oren, who employs both circular breathing and post-processing to expand an already intense approach to baritone saxophone. Tracky Naw (Guppy, Tube Socks) opens the show with an improvised set of solo guitar.

TUE. MAR. 6

@ CBGB | 9pm | 21+
-Blank Spell (Philadelphia, PA)
-Shux
-Q
-Complainer

Blank Spell might have the distinction of being the only hardcore band to tour with Deerhoof. Its approach is heady and weird but not too heavy. Local post-punks Shux celebrate the release of their demo on this night -- a sure-to-be solid document of the band who debuted only a few short months ago.

THU. MAR. 8

@ Strawberry Bounce House | 8pm | free
-Lobby Boxer (tour kickoff)
-Bill K'narly and the Reptilians
-Yuppy

With a propulsive and maddeningly skillful sense of rhythm, Lobby Boxer is able to marry straight-up sing-songy sections with dense and brain-bending math rock. In an effortless blend of simplicity and complexity, the trio's overall vibe never feels overwrought or exhausting. This is a kick-off for the band's jaunt to this year's SXSW -- see them off.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!
