This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 26 - Mar. 4, 2018

MON. FEB. 26

@ Kerr Foundation | 8pm | $7-$10
-Bitchin Bajas (Chicago, IL)
-Nadir Smith
-The Funs

The brainchild of Cooper Crain (Cave, Warhammer 48K), Bitchin Bajas offers up an electro-acoustic abyss of circular synth and a wild, textural crosshatch of noise. One of St. Louis' straight-up coolest spaces hosts a night of prime exploratory music ranging from the rock-rooted Funs to the sample-based Nadir Smith.

FRI. MAR. 2

@ The B Side | 7pm
-Body Pressure (Austin, TX)
-Waterproof

St. Louis' most recent post-punk export in Waterproof backs up a tight two-band bill featuring the pulverizing hardcore of Body Pressure. The songs rarely relent, pushing a wall of low, guttural hum shaped by a strict and sharp rhythm section. The guitar is gripped by gnar and molded into harsh, memorable leads.

SAT. MAR. 3

@ GCADD | 9pm
Benefit for Arch City Defenders:
-Sea Priestess (tape release)
-Wax Fruit
-Lobster
-DJ Crim Dolla Cray
-DJ Ghost Ice

Coming off the release of a board game by his other endeavor Catholic Guilt, KDHX DJ Swan fronts the amorphous Sea Priestess, a pile of sonic oddities given a danceable shape. The recently released music video (above) offers an intimate look at the project and should be seen as both a promise and warning of the weirdness to come.

@ Way Out Club | 8pm | $5-$7
-Hundredmillionthousand (Canada)
-Hands and Feet
-Ali Naeini
-Eric Hall

Capping off a week of wondrous electronic acts comes the immeasurable Hundredmillionthousand, who takes a distinct approach to carefully stacking moving layers of melody. Pieces are peeled and reset in real time, resulting in a rhythmic rip that is undeniably buoyant.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 12 - 18, 2018

WED. FEB. 14

El Lenador | 7:30pm | $5
-Bad History Month (Boston, MA)
-Longface (Chicago, IL)
-Daytime Television
-Sean+Kaleb
-Nicole Grace
-DJ nebulosa

What first feels like a minimalist take on songwriting unfolds into a disparate and sonorous soundscape rife with regret, self-loathing and ultimately redemption. The man behind Boston's Bad History Month is an absolute wordsmith, and he paints multitudes with solemn strokes of a six-string. Julio Prato wears his DJ hat as nebulosa to glue together this alternative to Valentine's Day on Cherokee Street.

@ Foam | 8pm | $5 | all ages
Benefit for Metro Trans Umbrella Group:
-Transgression (Louisville, KY)
-Pryss (Springfield, IL)
-Chalked Up
-Mom

With one ear pressed firmly to the pavement, Transgression recycles oppression into aggression with its succinct and ferocious flavor of hardcore. Springfield-native Pryss is St. Louis' strongest satellite of dark and frantic punk. The cause is enough to take notice, but the bands are reason enough to actually go. Donate directly at www.stlmetrotrans.com.

THU. FEB. 15

@ CBGB | 9pm | $5-$7 | 21+
-Mint (Philadelphia, PA)
-Fried E/M
-Waterproof

Wiry post-punk outfit Mint injects fiery rock riffing inside a sharp and pointed set of songs. The band's general aesthetic feels expansive, as if any sound could come leaking out at any time. The Philly group matches that potential in a passive way, not calling attention to its pure skill and musicianship throughout. St. Louis' own post-punk newbies Waterproof open the gig with their first show.

@ Foam | 8pm | $7 | all ages
-Melkbelly (Chicago, IL)
-Glued
-The Funs
-Shady Bug

From the low pounding of the toms to the signature snappy fills heard in Lightning Bolt, Melkbelly amplifies its folk and roots songcraft with an absolutely bonkers rhythm section. The show as a whole gives off the vibe of some Exploding in Sound label showcase at SXSW -- a night of indie bands set up on a slab of rock floating in lava.

SUN. FEB. 18

@ HOEL | 9pm | $5
-Beyond Peace (IA)
-Q
-Fried E/M

As one of the first shows at HOEL, this is worth hitting up to see how the building holds up during Q's set. Fried E/M lends local support for the second time this week, so consider this an encore (or an option if you missed them on Thursday). The space is tiny, so ear protection is mandatory.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!
