This Week In St. Louis: Nov. 27 - Dec. 3, 2017

TUE. NOV. 28

@ Foam | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Bad History Month (Boston, MA)
-Milk Vetch
-Whsky Janetor
-A Leaf In the Street

What Bad History Month can extract from a single guitar feels baffling, especially since each riff runs along a linear path laid by the click and thud of a highhat and kick drum. His voice occupies a mid-range wrapped by the peaks and valleys of a fretboard, yet all of these disparate pieces seamlessly drift together into a masterclass of songcraft. The new album, Dead and Loving It, was just released earlier this month through Exploding In Sound Records.

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Bethlehem Steel (NY)
-The Human Monster

The power trio of Bethlehem Steel digs its hands into a collective pile of fuzz, molding a kind of indie rock that feels both strong and somber. The band stretches and pulls its parts, building tension only to release it in bite-sized chunks. Recalling two-piece Hella and the more punk sections of early Tera Melos, Ursi makes a shrill and wiry kind of math rock that could only be birthed in the midwest. The Human Monster is a new evolution of the incomparable duo that makes up CCDS.

@ Kismet | 8pm | $5 | all ages
-Options (Chicago, IL)
-Single Player (Champaign, IL)
-Alex Cunningham
-Shady Bug

A product of the post-everything scene in Chicago, Options offers a set of songs that sit firmly in the indie rock camp. Melodic chords come atop propulsive beats, which carry thin and airy sections with a focused yet lackadaisical style. The local lineup offers up a mixed crew with violinist Alex Cunningham at the helm and the pop-sensible Shady Bug closing out the night.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

-Roughhousing (Ottawa, Ontario)
-Dave Stone/Larva/Ghost Ice trio

As Roughhousing, the trio of Jack Wright, Evan Lipson and Zach Darrup make a guttural brand of free improvisation that works in frequent bursts of energy with a startling dynamic range. The dream team of Ghost Ice, Larva and Dave Stone represent St. Louis with what's sure to be a powerful one-time performance. A can't miss for fans of free jazz, noise and experimental music in general.

THU. NOV. 16

-Thollem (NM)

SAT. NOV. 18

@ The Heavy Anchor | 8:30pm | $7 | 21+
Benefit for Planned Parenthood:
-Syna So Pro
-The Pat Sajak Assassins
-The Goes
-DJ Vinca Minor

Multi-instrumentalist Syrhea Conaway builds syncopated layers of rhythm and melody with her voice at the fore. Both her solo endeavor, Syna So Pro, and her full band, Pat Sajak Assassins, lead a solid night of locals in support of Planned Parenthood.

@ The Sinkhole | 8pm | free | all ages
-Shitstorm (tape release)
-The Vahnevants (Des Moines, IA)
-Goldblums (Des Moines, IA)
-The Death
-Maximum Effort

In the last four or so years, Shitstorm has gone from Matt Stuttler and a tape deck to a full-on rock and roll institution in St. Louis. This night celebrates the band's new tape in its native habitat of the Sinkhole (of which Stuttler and his wife own). Two Des Moines, IA rippers in The Vahnevants and Goldblums make for a well-rounded rock show.

SUN. NOV. 19

@ Foam | 7:30pm | all ages
-Yautja (Nashville, TX)
-Pyrrhon (NY)
-Van Buren

Featuring Tyler Coburn of Gnarwhal, Nashville's Yautja makes pulverizing songs that border on grind without shedding solid songwriting. The leads here are bolstered by beats with a polyrhythmic rip. Punchy bass riffing glues this power trio's densely packed sound into a well-oiled, cohesive unit. A mesmerizing and hypnotizing set of songs ensues.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

This Week In St. Louis: Nov. 6 - 12, 2017

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Night Shapes (Oakland, CA)
-The Stranger
-Tit for Tat

By cross pollinating post-punk and noise rock with synth-laden leads, Oakland's Night Shapes molds a gloomy mass of sound with deep, harrowing vocals at the fore. St. Louis' own Stranger rounds out the show with an equally-as-warped brand of punkish squalor, fit for sewer dwellers the midwest over.

@ Bolozone | 8pm | $5 | all ages
-Shellshag (Brooklyn, NY)
-Whsky Janetor
-Kelly Nothing

Shellshag's simplistic approach to the drums only brightens the heavy, slow-burning riffs of the guitar. Although the songs feel quite minimalist, the volume applied makes for a powerful and distinct aesthetic. There's a primal feel that permeates this fringe style of indie rock.

FRI. NOV. 10

@ Kismet | 8pm | $5 | all ages
-Gel Set (Los Angeles, CA)
-Ethik's Mind

Gel Set delicately stacks opposing layers of disparate beats and gripping leads with an affinity for repetition and drone. The complexity here doesn't come with jerking rhythms or shifting tempos but through aural alchemy and careful textural tampering. The recordings can be a suitable starting point, but greater nuance can and will be found at any Gel Set show.

SAT. NOV. 11

@ CBGB | 7pm | 21+
-Neon (CA)
-Cankro (Brazil)

An all-star mash up of punk and no-wave mainstays make up west coast outfit Neon, whose quick and deliberate songs apply stress and dissonance through strict thrashing. A loose static and hum pours overtop the stomping beats, making for a guttural and real set of songs. Plus, Cankro has come all the way from Brazil to play a tiny dive bar on South Grand.

@ SLU | 7pm | $10-$20 | all ages
New Music Circle and SLU present:
-John Wiese (Los Angeles, CA)

In addition to LA sound artist John Wiese's solo performance, this night will feature a ragtag ensemble filled with 15 of St. Louis' finest musicians. While the lineup does offer local luminaries in Darin Gray and Chris Trull among others, many of the players featured are young or relatively new in the music community. Check out New Music Circle's website for more information on John Wiese's St. Louis residency.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!
