This Week In St. Louis: June 12 - 18, 2017

TUE. JUN. 13

@ Foam | 9pm | $5-$7 | all ages
-Squelch (Little Rock, AR)
-Natural Velvet (Baltimore, MD)
-Gummy Ache

Squelch bangs its head against the beaten path of searing, lo-fi punk. There's no attempt at reinventing the wheel here -- the band opts to set it on fire and send it tumbling down a rocky hill. Gummy Ache is a new outfit from members of Sundowning and Glued.

WED. JUN. 14

Wed. Jun. 14 @ El Lenador
9pm | $5
-Dane Rousay (San Antonio, TX)
-Blank Thomas
-Mister Ben

San Antonio-native Dane Rousay seems to be in a constant state of touring, hitting St. Louis with a nuanced set of solo percussion. The nomadic drummer doesn't insult the audience with loud, flashy soloing but instead opts to tell a story with a set that flows from quiet and pensive pieces to dense flourishes of sound.

THU. JUN. 15

@ Kismet | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Hidden Ritual (TX)
-Trauma Harness
-Concentrator
-Seashine

What makes Hidden Ritual so distinct is its subtle injection of psychedelic riffs inside otherwise surfy songs, which results in a strange vibe that feels dark yet disconnected. Fresh off recording for a new LP, Trauma Harness brings its sculpted post-punk alongside Concentrator and Seashine, two relatively new favorites that have popped up in the last year.

FRI. JUN. 16

@ CBGB | 9pm | $5 | all ages
-Alouette (Chicago, IL)
-Jane Wave
-Sundowning

Chicago duo Alouette offers stripped down grunge with a hard grip on fuzz and static. Its songs harness a chaotic guitar tone where melodies leak out from under a wall of noise. Jane Wave appears in whatever form Sam Pounders opts for on this night and Sundowning rounds out the show with a tempered take on shoegaze.

FRI. JUN 16-SAT. JUN. 17

@ The Grove | $15
Riverfront Times Music Showcase:
-Yowie
-Little Big Bangs
-Trauma Harness
-The Stranger

More than 100 bands are crammed into 9 venues on a small strip of Manchester for twelve straight hours of rapid-fire sets. $15 comes out to less than 15 cents an act, but this show is worth the price alone just to see the spectacle of so many bands in one place.
