This Week In St. Louis: Feb. 27 - Mar. 5, 2017

@ Way Out Club | 9pm | free | 21+
-Glassmen (Madison, WI)
-Bitch Fit
-Nicole Grace
-Chelsea Gray
-Skin Tags

Way Out Weirdo Wednesday continues to deliver on its namesake with mixed lineups on the first Wednesday of every month. Booker David Bell combines the inanity and diversity found in his Paradoxal Pterodactyl podcast for a live show that mingles with punk, hip-hop, folk and all things experimental.

@ Kismet | 8pm | $5-$10 | all ages
-Anybody But the Cops (Kalamazoo, MI)
-Mary Lee Cook
-Bitch Fit

By twisting and bending common punk idioms with math-rock structure, Anybody But the Cops comes off as an unpretentious pusher of odd time signatures and busy riffing. The band's penchant for musical in-jokes would feel insular if not for its inherent humor and overall approachable vibe.

@ The Nest | 9pm | all ages
-Charles Allin (NY)
-Larva Lu
-Solid Waste

Jeremy Harris, the brain behind Lazy Magnet and Xerome, offers up his latest endeavor as the synth-fueled Charles Allin. Expect a low key and ambient night headed by a touring artist with more than twenty years experience in the game.

@ Foam | 9pm | all ages
-Erik Nervous (Kalamazoo, MI)
-Spodee Boy
-Mark Plant

Kalamazoo-native Erik Nervous hides a frenetic alter ego inside otherwise unsuspecting punk-rock songs that last roughly as long as a microwave takes to heat up day old pizza. Times Beach/Military Police frontman Mark Plant has returned to St. Louis after living in Chicago for several years and will perform under his "Mark Plant Solo Noise Project" which is song-based -- regardless of what the name might imply.

These are just some highlights. Check the sidebar for more!

Originally at Bonerville, this show has moved to RKDE, the recent addition to 2720's upper floor.

@ Schlafly Tap Room | 9pm | free | all ages
-Monotrope (OH)

With members of Hyrrokkin, Tigon and other bands loosely described as some flavor of "math rock," Monotrope subverts its own musical DNA with a more straight-forward rock excursion. Yowie performs in St. Louis for the first time since October with a set full of songs from its recently announced album, Synchromysticism

FRI. FEB. 17

Fri. Feb. 17 @ Foam
9pm | $5 | all ages
-Palberta (NY)
-Little Big Bangs
-The Chair Enthusiasts

The women of Palberta make anomalous no-wave songs that recently gained favor in both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, despite the group's obtuse approach. While Palberta has shared stages with bands such as Guerilla Toss, New England Patriots and Doomsday Student on the east coast, this show is the trio's first in St. Louis.

SAT. FEB. 18

@ Skate Liborious | 6pm | $10 | all ages
Brinkstock 2:
-Brother Lee and the Leather Jackals
-Bone Roaster

A slew of bands come together to raise money for the Ryan Brinkmann Skatepark Memorial Fund. Music does technically start at 6, but skaters can arrive as early as 1 to take advantage of the former church's ramps before showgoers crowd the space. If anything, the 7 or so minute reunion of Pink Sock is alone worth the price of admission.

-Nate Wooley (NY)

The first New Music Circle event of 2017 brings Ikue Mori (formerly of '70s no-wave outfit DNA) back to St. Louis alongside trumpeter Nate Wooley for a night of both solo and duo sets by both performers.

-Reaches (Brooklyn, NY)
-Wax Fruit
-Ethik's Mind

Reaches (formerly known as I Love You) offers a buoyant brand of wobbly pop punctuated by tumbling beats. As one of St. Louis' best kept secrets, Wax Fruit lays down dark shades of synth with subtle use of dual vocals.

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | $5
-Modern Convenience (Nashville, TN)
-Sweat Shoppe
-Fried EM

From Memphis to Nashville, Modern Convenience has been a long-standing punk outfit for several years, injecting elements of surf and classic rock'n'roll into its set of songs. The local lineup offers St. Louis stalwarts in Shitstorm and two bands that popped up in the last year: Fried EM and Sweat Shoppe.

SAT. FEB. 11

@ The Sinkhole | 9pm | free | all ages
-Anodes (7" release)
-Handsaw (IL)

Anodes has long since made its mark on post-hardcore in St. Louis (and the midwest for that matter) with intricate songs carried by coarse riffing and a jazzy rhythm section. Grab the new 7" and catch the band's first show in more than a year.
