Hess/Cunningham Duo
Ish
@ Foam / 3359 S. Jefferson Ave.
9 p.m. / $5 / all ages

One of the stand-outs from this year's PuFest, Imelda Marcos returns roughly six weeks later with its percussive approach to nuanced songs that twist, stretch and contort around a central melody before delving into a maddening grind. Ish closes this show with its amorphous pop, rife with scales and a split tongue.

This Week In St. Louis 10/3/16 - 10/9/16

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5

Way Out Weirdo Wednesday feat.:
Ali Naeini and Drew Gowran
Jason LaChance
Nebulosa
Schievvf
Brain Transplant
@ Way Out Club / 2525 S. Jefferson Ave.
9 p.m. / free / 21+

The duo of Ali Naeini and Drew Gowran headline this month's edition of David Bell's Way Out Weirdo Wednesday, which includes a solo performance by Jason LaChance (of Barely Free Partial Prisoners), Julio Prato (of Kenshiro's) as Nebulosa and a classic configuration of St. Louis' longest-standing noise troupe Brain Transplant.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6

Kal Marks (Boston, MA)
Glued
Kilometers Davis
A Leaf In the Street
@ Cookie Tree Mansion
8:45 p.m. / all ages

Boston's Kal Marks brings sawtooth indie rock from the ditches of the same music scene that produced Guerilla Toss, Pile and New England Patriots among many others. The band's approach to pensive, melodic passages mixing with thick, overdriven dirges provides an enormous payoff in regards to range and scope. St. Louis' own Glued features members of Blight Future, Persh, Fragile Farm and Whsky Gngr.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7

Fried Egg (Richmond, VA)
Fried E/M
Maximum Effort
Q
@ San Loo / 3211 Cherokee St.
9 p.m.

This solid weekender offers hyperactive hardcore via Richmond's Fried Egg alongside Lumpy Rex alums Q and the relatively new Fried E/M - a Lumpy offshoot that fires off more gritty punk baked in grime.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8

Ded Weight Vol. 2 release feat.:
Exitbag
Jaded Evil Lambs
Tubby Tom
Mussy Cluves
@ Dugan House
9 p.m. / all ages

Ded Weight is Kyle Izded's tiresome exercise in nihilism (which is sort of the point here) wrought with graphic sketches that juxtapose with snarky and slapstick satire. Being Kyle's first release in years, several of STL's harshest, most stringent of noise makers celebrate to peel the paint off the walls at Dugan Haus.

Bob Bucko Jr. (Dubuque, IA)
Vernacular String Trio
Fragile Farm
Grain
@ Foam / 3359 S. Jefferson Ave.
9 p.m. / all ages

Through sculpting lonesome waves of folk and drone, Dubuque's Bob Bucko Jr. offers an experimental expression of songwriting that rarely wavers in sharpness and wit. On this night, he is joined by St. Louis' Vernacular String Trio, who is set to release its debut on Bucko's label Personal Archives this fall.

TheBirdsAtThisHour feat.:
18andCounting
Black Body Heat
Kullus
BoBo/Hylidae/18aC trio
TheOnlyEnsemble

@ The Luminary / 2701 Cherokee St.
9 p.m. / $10

Stan Chisholm, the brains behind 18andCounting, debuts a three-part series on this night titled TheBirdsAtThisHour, which features both digital and physical installations as well as live performances by a variety of performers and collaborators. Parts 2 and 3 occur in November and December, and will ultimately culminate with a release party at the end.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9

The Blues (Oakland, CA)
Larva Lu
Beauty Pageant
Mike Herr
Aluminum Sasquatch Trio

Trauma Harness
@ The Nest
8 p.m. / $7 / all ages

While the show technically starts at 8 p.m., all are invited to the Nest from 4 p.m. for a BBQ and party. The Blues is pretty obscure (literally, there is little to no information about this band online), but the band sports members from Violence Creeps so that should be assurance of a solid performance.

See the calendar side bar for more shows happening soon including Quintron and Miss Pussycat at the Firebird on Saturday.

This Week In St. Louis 9/26/16 - 10/2/16

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

Buck Gooter (Harrisonburg, VA)
Animal Lover (Minneapolis, MN)
Phantom Head (Kansas City, MO)
Trauma Harness
Complainer

@ Foam / 3359 South Jefferson

9 p.m. / $7 / all ages
In passing, I've heard Buck Gooter described as "this dude in his 60s, playing this crazy noise rock." These are harsh and biting songs via metallic guitar and a stabbing drum machine. Kansas City's Phantom Head combines dark, stringent punk in mostly half-time with snarky vocals and an overall noisy vibe, while Animal Lover sates the Shellac-obsessed with amps loud enough to crack asphalt. Trauma Harness opens in the back room -- check its new release right here.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

The World (Oakland, CA)
Warm Bodies (Kansas City, MO)
The Stranger
The Wad
9 p.m. / $5-$7 / all ages
The World and Warm Bodies' recent dual live tape is a match made in MRR punk heaven. The World errs more on the side of sax-laden no-wave, yet its songs carry an optimistic and upbeat party-vibe. Be first in line to catch the Wad, another new band a la south city.

Cyrus Pireh (Duluth, MN)
Beauty Pageant
Mike Herr
The Goes
9 p.m. / 21+
Cyrus Pireh merges complex loops of harsh guitar with modular synthesizer in pieces that slowly unfold to reveal disparate melodies. The video above is decidedly lo-fi, yet it provides a preview of his singular approach that is absolutely dense but still wholly accessible.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

(FL)
Public Memory (NY)
Hylidae
9 p.m. / all ages
On its latest release on 4AD, Merchandise displays a gloomy shoegaze layered with huge, vibrant drumming and an uncanny sense of melody. Riffs feel as if they're being pulled down from outer space yet retain a semblance of structure inside the tight rhythm section. Hot off the release of his latest self-titled album and a recent tour, Hylidae opens the show.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1

New Music Circle presents:
Kris Davis and Craig Taborn duo
7 p.m. / $10-$20
Accomplished improviser and renowned pianist Kris Davis just released an album titled Duopoly. On this recording, Davis performs in duos with eight different artists making one composed song and one improvised piece each. One of these duos is with performer Craig Taborn, and this event is your shot at seeing the two live -- a stellar kick-off for New Music Circle's 2016-2017 season.

Typesetter (Chicago, IL)
The Hurt Ensemble (RI)
Staghorn
Early Worm
9 p.m. / $5-$7 / all ages
Chicago's Typesetter blends shoegazing songs with the volume and intense approach of a post-hardcore band. Every little part feels magnified with little to no restraint. Staghorn provides local support with its slow-burning, post-apocalyptic, post-rock songs featuring new drummer, Max Sandza.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2

Flamingo (Berlin/Denmark)
Thumpy Sticky
Eric Hall
Gaslight hosts a free-jazz event featuring players from Berlin and Denmark in the trio Flamingo. Thumpy Sticky offers the quartet of Drew Gowran, J.J. Hamon, Chris Powers and Dave Stone. Eric Hall will perform a solo electronic set to open the evening.

See the calendar side bar for more shows happening this week including the next edition of Bruxism, Terror Pigeon at Chill Dawg Cove, GCADD Exhibition 7 in Granite City, Tory Starbuck at Mangia Italiano and Jack Wright at Foam with Ghost Ice and others.
