FRIDAY, JUNE 5
Hands and Feet
@ The Heavy Anchor / 5226 Gravois
9 p.m. / $5 / 21+
Hands and Feet put out one of the best records to come out of St. Louis in 2014. This one man band plays atop busy backing tracks with live bass, guitar, synth and melodica, but his work never feels restrained despite a relatively simple setup. For fans of Tortoise, Talkdemonic, video game music, etc.
SATURDAY, JUNE 6
Digital Leather (Omaha, NE)
Bort (first show)
@ Foam / 3359 S. Jefferson Ave.
9 p.m. / $7 / all ages
Digital Leather brings chilled out pop rock that's not afraid to slobber on a mic through a truck-stop glory-hole. All the songs here feel like the sort of thing anyone could just pick up and play on their own guitar. To the band's credit, the riffs are catchy as can be without a shred of complexity. Bort plays its first show on this night, members of Posture, Brainstems, others.
Gula-Gila (Chicago, IL)
Pigeon (Carbondale, IL)
@ Schlafly Tap Room / 2100 Locust St.
9 p.m. / free / all ages
Gula-Gila brings gnarly no-wave by way of Chicago. The video up above shows the band's first show from back in 2012, but expect new material via femme-fronted sewer-punk. And for fans of the underrated '90s (think Unwound, early Tortoise, Red Medicine-era Fugazi), Pigeon comes up from Carbondale with down-trodden, somber grunge that sits about an inch away from noise rock. Free show.
