Dave Stone, Mabel Suen, Alex Cunningham & Fred Tompkins
@ Blank Space / 2847 Cherokee Street

Laubrock & Rainey are a saxophone and drum duo who spin free-jazz through two familiar instruments. Through an unconventional approach, both players bring a frantic sound with a solid textural pairing This event is technically the first half of a New Music Circle showcase, which happens to cap a very successful 2013-2014 season for the organization. Dave Stone, Alex Cunningham and Fred Tompkins all help to make up a talented roster of local players. There will be two different performances, one with Laubrock and the other with Rainey, collaborating with St. Louis musicians.

TUESDAY, MAY 20

NMC Showcase:
Ingrid Laubrock & Tom Rainey
(NY)
Tyler Damon (IN)
NNN Cook
Chris Trull
Kevin Harris

@ Kerr Foundation / 21 O'Fallon Street
7 pm / $10-20 / all ages

This is the second half of New Music Circle's big finale for the 13/14 season. Catch Ingrid Laubrock & Tom Rainey perform as a duo, Tyler Damon, Chris Trull and Kevin Harris perform as a trio and an opening solo set by NNN Cook. This particular show works great as an intro to not only free-jazz, but electro-acoustic music as well as noise. All three sets are informed by many forms of improvisational music, so this show is all but guaranteed to be high quality. Highly recommended.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 21

Keir Neuringer (PA)
Eric Hall/Joseph Hess Duo
NNN Cook
John Beabout

@ BANK projects / 3420 Iowa Avenue
9 pm / $5 / all ages

Keir Neuringer uses circular breathing to create long-form solo saxophone pieces that gradually rise with varied intensity. His powerful squalor stands on its own with discernible depth, maintaining a level of intricacy that demands deeper listening, or at the very least, your undivided attention. John Beabout, also known for his work in Stonechat, takes to the keys with a natural inclination for wild, organic sound. If you missed him the night before, NNN Cook will once again perform with a solo, electro-acoustic set.

Also on Wednesday Night:

The Body (RI) plays Apop Records with Fister and Dear Satan.

Mr. Ben's NOiSE series continues with a huge line up of local improvisers over at Blank Space. The show is free!
