Recommended Shows This Week 6/17/13 - 6/23/13

Bad News (San Francisco, CA)
Coppice (Chicago, IL)
Jason Zeh (Kansas City, KS)
N.N.N. Cook
@ Apop Records / 2831 Cherokee St.
9 PM / $7 / all ages

Guitar blends with synth in this experimental evening curated by Apop Records. The $7 price tag might be higher than usual, but the acts featured are all worth the extra scratch. Jason Zeh works with cassette tape manipulation, using prepared devices to create realms of varied sound.

Zack Kouns (Ironton, OH)
Zak Marmalefsky
Larva Lou
Spelling Bee

@ CBGB / 3163 South Grand Ave.
9 PM / free / 21+

Zack Kouns brings a mixed bag, sometimes pushing harsh noise while, at other times, playing sleazy electro-jams peppered with saxophone. Zak Marmalefsky croons over dark guitar melody, providing thick and accessible songs that feature deeply literal and personal lyrics. Larva Lou and Spelling Bee bring a little femininity to this Zach-Fest.

Black Flag
Good For You

@ Fubar / 3108 Locust St.
8 PM / $30 / all ages

This is not the original Black Flag, but it is the (Official) Black Flag nonetheless. Not much else to say here.

(Brooklyn, NY)
Lovely Little Girls (Chicago, IL)
@ Schlafly Tap Room / 2100 Locust St.
8 PM / free / all ages

Skin Graft emerged in the early '90s as a comic and music hybrid label blending 7" record releases with 7x7 comic books. Label owner Mark Fischer spent the label's early years in St. Louis, where he started a legacy that would resonate in experimental circles for years to come. Skin Graft put out amazing groups like Dazzling Killmen, U.S. Maple, Space Streakings, Melt-Banana and many others. On Friday, June 21, the Schlafly Tap Room in St. Louis will host a free showcase featuring three of Skin Graft's active bands, including Yowie, Lovely Little Girls and Xaddax (featuring Nick Sakes of Dazzling Killmen). Al Johnson (of U.S. Maple) will MC the show.
