Recommended Shows This Week 2/25/13 - 3/3/13

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 27

Beauty Pageant
Pat Sajak Assassins
Shut In
Forteana

@ Blank Space / 2847 Cherokee St.
9 p.m. / $5 / 21+

Saint Louis' finest converge on a night of mad experiments. Beauty Pageant creeps up on you and yours with swamp noise while Shut In lays down solid grunge rock. Forteana brings metal and prog with dark, noodling jams. Stuck somewhere between all this is the melodic math of the Pat Sajak Assassins. Expect a night of total brain bending, or blending.

FRIDAY, MAR. 1

Acid Baby Jesus (Athens, GREECE)
Hellshovel (Detroit, MI)
Demonlover
Little Big Bangs

@ The Heavy Anchor / 5226 Gravois
9 p.m. / $7 / 21+

Get sweaty and smelly with garage rock from abroad. Acid Baby Jesus delivers on everything you love with the finest in lazy rock n' roll. Little Big Bangs hammer away with angry abandon while pushing out tightly wound psych-rock. Demonlover is an anomaly, and somehow crafts careful rock that everyone loves to love.

SATURDAY, MAR. 2

Lazy Magnet (Everywhere, USA)
Secret Boyfriend (Carrboro, NC)
Lobster
Radiant Husk
Beauty Pageant

@ Apop Records / 2831 Cherokee St.
9 p.m. / $5 / all ages

Lazy Magnet plans on retiring his nineteen year old moniker next year when it turns twenty. Come see a grown and sexy noise beside some of St. Louis' creepiest. Beauty Pageant continues its tour of the River City with more wild sounds. Apop's basement is home to all types of oddballs.

SUNDAY, MAR. 3

Lechuguillas (Austin, TX)
Kisser
NRML PPL
Anodes

@ Mushmaus / 2700 Cherokee St.
9 p.m. / $5 / all ages

Lechuguillas tears rock asunder with big walls of feedback and heavy, sharp drumming. Think Lightning Bolt meets Black Sabbath, or something to that effect. Kisser is almost trippy, but keeps itself grounded by being heady and solid. NRML PPL brings out heavy mid-tempo hardcore and Anodes makes a big sound with hearty melodies.

Other stuff to check out:
DinoFight! releases their new CD at Off Broadway on Thursday, February 28th.

Recommended Shows This Weekend 2/22/13 - 2/23/13

FRIDAY, FEB. 22

OU OÙ ALBUM RELEASE SHOW
Problems That Fix Themselves
(Chicago, IL)
Black James
Britches
Beauty Pageant

@ Blank Space / 2847 Cherokee St.
8 pm / $5 / 21+

Noise and dance are joined by performance artists, drag queens and burlesque dancers in a dirty cocktail garnished with sugar. Five bucks nets you six shows that combine the subversive and the sexy. Hopefully the whole affair leaves you feeling bizarre, or at least uncomfortable. Video by Chizmo.TV and Tom Buckholz.

Kisser
The Funs
Little Big Bangs

@ Schlafly Tap Room / 2100 Locust St.
9 p.m. / free / all ages

These three groups share common threads: All of them are suitably fuzzy with throaty yelling, and all worship at the church of feedback. Tap Room provides these gigs for free, so bring your bucks for the bands and hang in St. Louis' best kept secret.

SATURDAY, FEB. 23

Joan of Arc (Chicago, IL)
Foxing
Good Luck At The Hog Slaughter

@ The Demo / 4144 Manchester Blvd.
8 p.m. / $10 / 18+

Joan of Arc can be perused via the clip up top, but Foxing and GLATHS are barely visible online. Both groups are fairly new, but this event serves as a release show for Foxing's new 7" through Carucage Records. GLATHS, on the other hand, will be performing for the first time on this evening, so be sure to stand super close to the stage and stare intently.

Though not in St. Louis per se, the Lions Eat Grass release show happens over in Collinsville on Friday, February 22nd. Hit the Facebook event for relevant info.

Things to look out for next week:
Bitchin' Bajas @ Mushmaus on Monday
South City weirdo edition of Stag Nite @ Blank Space on Wednesday
Acid Baby Jesus @ The Heavy Anchor on Friday

Recommended Shows This Week 2/11/13 - 2/17/13

MONDAY, FEB. 11

Church Whip (FL)
Shaved Women
Rat Heart

@ Plush (upstairs) / 3224 Locust St.
9 PM / $5 / 21+

The easily offended should skip out, or get over themselves. Church Whip brings in your face punk via heavy drums (think lots of floor tom) and grimy riffs. Sick guitar sounds jut out over guttural vocals. Shaved Women is nihilistic rock for the ones too lazy to make a change.

TUESDAY, FEB. 12

Sick Llama
Behindlings
(Smentkowski/Cook Duo)
Tarpit
Wamhoda

@ Apop Records / 2831 Cherokee St.
9 PM / $5 / all ages

Sick Llama provides sick synth and sounds under the guise of noise, but more than chaos lays hidden. There's a reason why Sick Llama's an All Tomorrow's Parties alumni. Check out the rare appearance of Behindlings, a collaboration between Brain Transplant and N.N.N. Cook.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 13

Ex-Cult (Memphis, TN)
Lumpy and The Dumpers
Animal Teeth
Big Blue
(first show!)
@ Blank Space / 2847 Cherokee St.
9 PM / $5 / 21+
Ex-Cult brings the foot tapping garage rock with a real heavy dose of reverb. Lumpy and The Dumpers practice in our basement sometimes, so we get to hear all their bad jokes. Now, you can too! If you're into loose fitting indie-jams, you can't go wrong with this one. Pre-game your V-day.

THURSDAY, FEB. 14 Valentines Day?

Black James
Barely Free Partial Prisoners
MME
18&COUNTING

@ Mushmaus / 2700 Cherokee St.
8 p.m. / $5 / all ages

Expect a teddy bear photo booth, vegan cupcakes, ass shaking and some wild blend of noise and dance. The video above depicts a drawn back Black James, but don't expect careful songs on this night. Every set will be oriented for moving and shaking as this dance party's designed to get you laid. BYOB, for better or worse.

SATURDAY, FEB. 16

Male Bondage (Indianapolis, IN)
Trauma Harness
Violations

@ The Livery / 3211 Cherokee St.
9 PM / $5 / 21+

Male Bondage will probably throw down their guitars and wrestle you to the ground. If you're down for a mouth full of body hair, check out the dude-li-est band in the country. This is pure rock n' roll with maximum ball hair. Come early to see Trauma Harness rip with spacey post punk.

FRIDAY, FEB. 8

Doom Town (7" release show)
Pillow Talk
Spending Habits

@ Blank Space / 2847 Cherokee St.
9 p.m. / $5 / 21+

Bring cash for wax, because Doom Town will sling their second vinyl at the show: A split 7” with Black For A Second produced by local label Tower Groove Records. Pillow Talk joins Doom Town in stomping ears with their heavy racket. When hardcore has room for jazz, Pillow Talk fills the void. Expect brainy drumming over strong, noisy rock.

SATURDAY, FEB. 9

Regret, The Informer (Kansas City, MO)
Anodes
Trauma Harness
Laika

@ The Radskeller / 7895 Watson Rd.
8 p.m. / $5 / all ages

Anodes returns to St. Louis after a nine day tour through the Midwest with Regret, The Informer. Patrons of post-hardcore: Show your support. Laika's pretty green so they're probably new to you, and Trauma Harness is trying to beat out the Minutemen for pure quantity of songs. Go!

SUNDAY, FEB. 10

Coward (Kansas City, MO)
Shut In
+ TBA
@ Blank Space / 2847 Cherokee St.
9 p.m. / $5 / 21+

Coward is post-rock wrought with feedback and heavy jams. Shut In brings St. Louis-flavored grunge rock with long hair and heavy hitters. The gig was booked on short notice, so expect a surprise or two in the line-up on this night.

Gigs to look out for next week:
Church Whip (FL) at Plush on Monday
Black James and Barely Free Partial Prisoners at Mushmaus on Thursday
Male Bondage (IN) at The Livery on Saturday
